All the big guns will be represented at Christie’s Impressionist & Modern art sale on May 1st, which kicks off their spring series of art auctions in New York. Works by Monet, Matisse, Picasso, and Giacometti are each expected to sell for as much as $12m. The top estimated lot, however, is Cezanne’s “Joueur de cartes (card player), a watercolor that may realize $20m.Cezanne produced the work as part of his card player series executed between 1890-1896. It comes from the collection of the late Dr. Heinz Felix Eichenwald, a Texas physician whose parents acquired the recently rediscovered study, and brought it with them to the U.S. when they fled the Nazi occupation in the 1930’s.
