Sotheby’s turns its focus to 20th Century Italian art in a London sale featuring major works by Lucio Fontana, Marino Mariani, Giorgio de Chirico and Alberto Burri. Top lots at the October 15th sale, which has become a yearly event for Sotheby’s, are expected to be de Chicico’s “Interno Metafisico (Natura Morta Metafisica)” and Lucio Fontana’s “Concetto Spaziale, Attese,” each of which is estimated to sell for up to $4 million.
Other works carrying high expectations in the sale include Marino Marini’s bronze sculpture “Cavaliere,” featuring a horse and rider (est.$1.1-$1.4 million), as well as predominantly white (est. $2.4-$3.2 million) and red (est. $2.5-$3.5 million) examples from Lucio Fontana’s Tagli series, featuring his signature slashes through the canvases. The sale is expected to generate more than $19 million, more than double the estimate for last year’s sale.
