Between 1895 and 1902 Norwegian painter Edvard Munch completed a variety of impressions of the Madonna, a series that emerged in seven different states. At its Print sale next week Bonhams will offer one of the earliest versions, a hand-colored print that has never been seen in public. It’s expected to sell for between $755,000 and $1.05 million.
UPDATE: The Munch sold for $1.89 million.
Of the few hand-colored Munch Madonna prints existing, most are in public collections and it’s rare for one to appear on the market. This “Madonna” was part of the estate left by Abstract Expressionist arts Avray Wilson (1914-2009). “This is a hugely significant work and in beautiful condition, “ said Bonhams” Robert Kennan. “Munch returned to the Madonna time and again over a seven year period and it is fascinating to see this iconic image at its very earliest stage of its evolution in print.”
