Works by Jamie Wyeth, Milton Avery, and Thomas Eakins are among the star attractions at Christie’s Fine American Paintings, Drawings & Sculpture sale on March 3 in New York. Wyeth’s whimsical depiction of his Labrador, “Study of Kleberg,” is the cover lot, estimated at $40-$60,000.
Update: Wyeth’s “Study of Kleberg” sold for $218,000, almost four times the high estimate.
A Vermont landscape painted by Avery in 1936 carries the top estimate of $50-$70,000 for the auction, which includes another of his canvasses, “Blue Nude,” a 1946 work that registers Avery’s evolving shift towards abstraction. Paintings by William Trost Richard, Morris Graves, Ernest Lawson and Lila Cabot Perry are among the other featured lots in the sale.
