A copy of the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation signed by Abraham Lincoln and bought by Robert F. Kennedy in 1964 sold at Sotheby’s last Friday for a record $3,778,500. More than twice the highest presale estimate, it was the highest price ever paid at auction for a Presidential document.
As we reported earlier, the Proclamation was one of only 48 printed copies that Lincoln signed, only about half of which are known to exist. Sotheby’s sold the document, for which Kennedy paid $9500, on behalf of his widow, Ethel.
