Heritage will sell a 16th Century illuminated manuscript once owned by William Waldorf Astor. Ornately illustrated, with pure gold detail, the manuscript is a bound devotional concerning saints’ days, psalms, and prayers, called a “Book of Hours.”
Known as the “Astor-Aubéry de Frawenberg Hours,” the “book” is as much a work of art as a manuscript. These creations were a prized collectible by European royalty, Astor, then the richest man in America in the mid-1850′s, paid 420-pounds. Minimum estimate at the New York April 7 -9th auction is $325,000.
