It’s not unusual, given the size of the late, great Steve McQueen’s automobile collection, for one of his cars to come up for sale. For two to appear in the same sale, however, is something special, especially when one of them has the pedigree of the 1970 Porsche 911 that RM will be offering at Pebble Beach next week. McQueen drove the car in the opening sequence of his motoring classic, “LeMans,” after which it joined his personal collection. RM didn’t reveal an estimate for the car, which is an indication of their sense of its unusual value.
RM is also offering a 1953 Siata 208S Spyder that McQueen owned. He acquired the car, based on a Fiat with body by Farina, in 1956, after his career had begun to ignite. McQueen attached Ferrari badges to Siata, and reportedly called it his “little Ferrari,” Following an extensive restoration, the car won badges at Pebble Beach and Quail Lodge. It’s estimated at $875,000-$1,175,000.
