Judy’s “Oz” Dress to Go For $500,000?

It’s ironic that the dress Judy Garland wore in the “Wizard of Oz” is expected to sell in the $500,000 range when the actress, herself, was perennially broke most of her adult life. The blue gingham pinafore with puffy white sleeves that Judy wore 75-years ago will be offered by Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills, Nov.9 and 10.

Few items in fashion can rival the enduring appeal of the Hermes bag, in its various iconic styles, for which women routinely wait months or years. Another route to acquiring one is in the sale Bonhams will offer next month in London of a private collection of 64 Hermes bags, known for their exotic skins. Featured items include a black patent crocodile Birkin bag, 2003 (est. $12,900-$19,400), and a fuchsia ostrich Kelly bag(est. $6,500-$9,700).

Audrey Hepburn’s “Roman Holiday” Dress To Sell

Who can forget the impression of winsome elegance that Audrey Hepburn made in “Roman Holiday?” It made her an instant star—she won an Oscar in 1954—and of course a fashion icon for the ages. Now the Edith Head-designed dress she wore in the movie’s last scene will be sold at a London auction, where it’s estimated to bring $63,000-$95,000.

UPDATE: Hepburn’s dress sold above estimates for $109,836, and Elizabeth Tayor’s Balenciaga gown brought $40,791. The dress worn by Amy Winehouse realized $56,387, well above the $32,000 high estimate.

Two Of Lady Diana’s Frocks Command $276K

Kate Middleton and the Prince are off the stage, or at least out of their wedding clothes, but William’s mother still looms large. Over the weekend two of her dresses sold for more than 4 times their estimate.

“Dress” That Won Prince’s Heart?

The See-thru dress said to have landed an English prince sold for $125,000 at a charity fashion show and  auction in London Friday.  The so-called dress went to an anonymous buyer in the room. There were several bidders. Early estimates were around $25,000. It cost $50 to make.

Diana’s Black Dress Turns Gold

It was expected to sell for as much as $76,000. But when bidding ended on Diana’s black gown, the first she’d worn at an official appearance, the final price was $276,000 – or six times higher. The winning bidder at London’s Kerry Taylor Auctions was a fashion museum in Chile.

Isabella Blow Wardrobe

Two tragedies and one sale.  Three years ago fashion trend setter Isabella Blow killed herself. Her frequent designer, Alexander McQueen, reportedly saw her as his muse and was badly depressed after her death. This year McQeen killed himself. On Sept.15, 2010, Christie’s will auction Ms. Blow’s wardrobe in London.
