Cleopatra’s Daughter Goes For $2.5m
December 08, 2011Just before Christ, a Roman artist created an “emblema,” a raised wall relief, enshrining Selene, the only daughter Cleopatra had with Marc Antony. Selene is shown wearing an elephant headdress with tusks and ears drooping around her face. Fashioned from a single silver sheet adorned with diamonds, the piece sold for $2.55m at Christie’s Antiquities and Ancient Jewelry auction in New York.

December 08, 2010A marble bust has sold for a heady $23.8 million at a Sotheby’s New York antiquities auction yesterday. The “Marble Portrait Bust of the Deified Antinous, Roman Imperial, Reign of Hadrian,” circa A.D. 130-138, was the focus of a spirited 11-minute competition between five collectors who vied for the prize, rocketing the price above its $3 million high estimate.
