Arab Spring Triggers Market Fall
October 12, 2011Many, if not most, of the effects of this spring’s ‘Arab Awakening’ are still unknown. The auction market, however, experienced one of its less welcome ones last week: a sharp downturn in Islamic art. Fully 57 percent of the works went unsold at Sotheby’s Modern and Contemporary and Iranian sale, including the highest estimated lots by Farhad Moshiri and Parviz Tanavoli. At Sotheby’s evening sale of Islamic art, the results were even worse. Only 30 percent of the lots sold.

May 24, 2011Colin Tennant, more lately the 3rd Lord Glenconner, was “born into great privilege,” he once said, and used some of its trappings to acquire and transform the Carribbean island of Mustique. He shaped it into one of the storied playgrounds of the 1960s and ‘70s, a jet set haven for rock stars and royalty. Then he moved on, with his pet elephant, to a fabulous villa in St. Lucia. Bonhams will sell its highly unusual contents this September in London.

October 13, 2010With sales across several categories, including collector cars, art and watches, Bonham’s brought in a total of $4.4 million at its October 11th auctions in Dubai. Two BMW’s – the first ever to have been offered from BMW’s office factory collection – set new world records for their models, and a mixed media piece by Jawad Salim set a record for the late Iraqi artist, selling for $384,000.

April 05, 2010In Middle East Art circles Farhad Moshiri is widely known for quirky, avant garde art work and installations. At an auction scheduled for April 27, 2010, in Dubai, Christie’s will offer  Moshiri’s “Flying Carpet,” a stack of 32 carpets cut into the shape of a jet fighter. The high end of the estimate for it is $350,000. A total of 124 lots will be offered.
