Irma Stern’s “Pink Sari” Will Be Auctioned

February 07, 2012

Back in March of last year, South African artist Irma Stern’s “Arab Priest” exceeded all expectations when it sold for $4.94m. Her “Pink Sari,” painted in 1947 during a trip to Zanzibar, isn’t expected to eclipse that record at Bonhams sale of South African art next month in London. All the same, the portrait, never before seen on the open market, is anticipated to command a substantial $1.27m-$1.9m.

Irma Stern Tops South African Art Sale

October 26, 2011

In 1942, South African artist Irma Stern visited the Congo in search of inspiration. One canvas that resulted was “Watussi Woman,” an oil depicting Emma Bakayishonga, who was the sister of the Watussi king Mutara III Rudahigwa. Yesterday it sold at Bonhams in London for $1.85m, within its $1.5m-2.4m estimates.

World Record For Irma Stern

March 23, 2011

The $3.8 million paid last October for Irma Stern’s “Bahora Girl” was a world record, but it didn’t last long. At Bonhams’ sale of “South African Masterpieces” in London earlier today, a bidder paid  $4.94 million for Stern’s “Arab Priest,” well above its $3.2 million high estimate.  Two other works by Stern sold for over $1 million, as did Alexis Preller’s “Garden of Eden,”  which fetched $1.2 million, another new artist record. A third was established for Gerard Sekoto, whose “Yellow Houses, District Six” brought in almost $970,000.

Bonhams To Sell South African Masterpieces

January 28, 2011

Last October, Bonhams scored a world record for South African art with its $3.8 million sale of Irma Stern’s “Bahora girl.” Following the strength of that success, the auction house has assembled 20 works “in a class all their own” that they’re calling “South African Masterpieces.” No fewer than 11 paintings by Irma Stern will be offered at the March 3rd sale in London, led by her “Arab Priest,” estimated at $2.4-$3.2 million.

World Record For South African Painting

October 28, 2010

A painting by South African artist Irma Stern  (1894-1966) sold for $3.8 million at Bonhams in London yesterday, almost triple the pre-sale estimate.  The 1946 “Bahora girl,” Stern’s rendering of a Zanzibar beauty, more than doubled the previous record for a South African work of art sold at auction.
