Basquiat Painting Expected To Set $20m Record
September 19, 2012In the early 80’s Jean-Michel Basquiat moved from street art into art galleries with his wildly neo-expressionist paintings such as an untitled, partial self-portrait that became—like all of his work–increasingly valuable after his death from a heroin overdose at 27. Christie’s will offer “Untitled, 1981,” at its Spring sale in London for what’s expected to be a record $20m.

February 24, 2012Every year Swann Galleries trains its focus on the African-American experience. This year’s sale of printed and manuscript material features over 550 items, with sections devoted to slavery and abolition, civil rights, black power, history, music and literature—everything from a photograph of Tuskegee Airmen (est. $2,000-$3,000), to a pair of slave manacles ($2500-$3500), to an Ivory elephant tusk recovered from the wreck of a 16th century slave ship (est. $8000-$12,000).

September 22, 2011The craze for so-called “street art” by grafitti artists continued unabated at Bonhams Urban Art Sale in London where 13 pieces by Banksy sold for impressive prices including $149,000 for “Monkey Detonator.” Contemporary Shepard Fairey’s “Chinese Soldier” went for $38,000.

January 04, 2011Legendary street artist Banksy will be the star at Bonhams’ January 11th sale of Urban Art in London. The top lot, estimated to sell for $93-$123,000, is a photographic poster that Greenpeace commissioned from the artist to highlight the problem of global deforestation.
