A. Lange & Sohne Sets Record In Geneva

March 19, 2013

It’s a rare vintage watch auction these days in which Patek Philippes don’t carry the day. One such sale occurred this week at Geneva, however, where Antiquorum offered a selection of classic and modern timepieces to more than 454 registered bidders from around the world. Top honors went to a limited edition A. Lange & Sohne Pour Le Merite Tourbillion wristwatch, which sold for $357,086. It was a new world auction record for the watchmaker.

Once Again, Patek Phillipe Scores Record Price

April 27, 2012

Antiquorum thought they might get $800,000 for a rare platinum Patek Phillipe at its auction this week in New York, but following spirited bidding an American buyer paddled down $902,500, the highest price ever paid for a single dial Patek Philippe Ref. 3974. Several other Patek Phillipes at the sale also achieved record prices.

Rare Patek Philippe May Fetch $800,000

April 09, 2012

What sort of a wristwatch can you buy for $600,000-$800,000? If timepiece auctioneer Antiquorum’s estimate is correct, that would be a platinum Patek Philippe Ref.3974. The ultra-rare astronomic, minute repeating, self-winding platinum timepiece will be the highlight at Antiquorum’s sale on April 25th in New York. The next four most valuable lots in the auction are also Patek Philippes, whose expected prices range from $400,000 all the way down to $100,000.

March 14, 2012

A 19th century enameled pocket watch originally made for the Chinese market ignited a bidding war earlier this week at Antiquorum’s auction in Geneva, where it wound up selling for $788,300, nearly three times its high estimate. Chinese collectors vied with buyers from around the world for the 3 hammer and 3 gong minute repeating timepiece known as “Venus & Cupid—An Allegory of Love.” All told, the March 12th sale of 477 collectible timepieces brought in $6.8m.

$2.32m Patek Philippe In Geneva

November 14, 2011

Even for a town concentrated on watches, this weekend in Geneva was unusual. Both Sotheby’s and Antiquorum staged auctions on Sunday, followed today by Christie’s, where a 1968 Patek Philippe Ref.3448 pink gold wristwatch with moon phases more than doubled its $1.1 high estimate to claim $2.32m.

King’s Gift To Emperor: A ‘Fan Watch’

October 05, 2011

The Chinese aristocracy was crazy for extravagant watches so King George III had one crafted in the agate handle of a truly extravagant gold, silver, diamond, ruby, and emerald adorned fan for the 80th birthday of Emperor Qianlong in 1792. Antiquorum is selling that “Fan Watch” at its Timepieces auction in Hong Kong, October 22.  The estimate is in the $200,000 range.

Antiquorum Ticks to $2.8m Result

September 15, 2011

If current economic instability has affected watch collectors, there was no sign of it yesterday in New York, where a mix of buyers from Asia, Europe, Russia, and U.S. powered Antiquorum to a $2,792,050 result. After a lively competition between room, phone and Internet bidders, a 1980  “third series” Patek Philippe Ref. 2499 in gold emerged as the auction’s top seller at $374,500.

Auction Houses Target Asian Buyers

September 12, 2011

As with wine and art, much of the activity in the auction watch market has shifted to Hong Kong. Early next month, Sotheby’s will kick off its autumn season of sales with what it promises will be its largest selection of timepieces ever offered in that city. More than 470 lots worth some $13m will be available at the October 6th sale. The highlight: a 1951 Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronograph in pink gold that estimated at $410,000 to $610,000.

Audemars Piquet Carries Top Estimate At Antiquorum

June 07, 2011

Patek Philippe watches, especially those with multiple complications, have been selling so well at auction that it’s become unusual that the top estimated items at Antiquorum’s auction in New York tomorrow aren’t examples of the brand. Instead, the highest expectations are for a titanium and rose gold Audemars Piquet “Unique Grand Complication” watch made in 2000 for an Arnold Schwarzenegger charity auction and engraved with the former California Governor’s signature. It’s expected to fetch $250,000-$350,000.

Antiquorum’s Latest

May 10, 2011

While it’s unlikely that any of the watches that Antiquorum will auction later this week in Geneva will match the $5.7m paid last year for a 1943 Patek Philippe, the sale does feature a number of exceptional offerings. Among the most valuable is an 1880’s Breguet silver carriage clock made for the Marquise de Bethisy. Featuring a variety of “complications,” including alarm, quadruple perpetual calendar, and moon phases, it’s expected to fetch $170,000-$227,000.

Ostrich Fan Watch In Hong Kong

February 04, 2011

It’s a long way from a wristwatch: the highlight at Antiquorum’s  auction of timepieces later this month in Hong Kong is a rare Ostrich Fan Watch dating from the mid-19th century, made by Czapek & Cie. Concealed within its hand-painted enamel, rose-cut diamonds and white feathers is a watch and pencil.   It carries an estimate of $100-$150,000.

Sir Edmund Hillary’s Rolex Collection

October 27, 2010

The case of the 1953 Rolex Oyster Perpetual is engraved “Sir E. Hillary,” and if it looks a bit battered, it came by its appearance honestly. The watch was presented to the famous explorer after his descent from Everest, and he wore it during the TransAntarctic Expedition of 1955-58. Antiquorum will auction it, along with four other Rolexes from Sir Edmund’s collection, at its Geneva sale on November 13th and 14th.
