Over $200,000 Expected For Spitfire Remnant
February 16, 2012In its last wartime mission, a training flight in 1944, the Spitfire fighter plane with the call sign NK-K didn’t fare well. It crashed and its Australian pilot perished. Since that time, its parts have been assembled in a fuselage and cockpit display that a local English scout troop used for promotional purposes. This weekend, the English auctioneer Historics at Brooklands will auction the historic plane—or what remains of it—in a sale at Mercedes-Benz World in Surrey, where it’s expected to fetch $190,000-$237,000.

June 07, 2011Few cars have histories as colorful or varied as the beautifully restored supercharged 1931 4 1/2 Litre Bentley that sold for $1.1m last week at Historics of Brooklands. During the Blitz, the automobile served as a utility vehicle delivering food in London and later belonged to the Chief Game Officer in Kenya. Over time, it was variously held in the U.S., Great Britain, South Africa and then Japan, where it finished the Japanese Mille Miglia and the Le Mans Classic Japan. Back in the U.K. since 2007, the Bentley sold within estimates.

April 20, 2011Long before Bentleys were essential bling, they were champions of the racetrack, with five Le Mans victories in the 1920’s. That period came to a close in 1931 when Rolls Royce—a company with no sporting history—acquired the brand. In 1933, however, Bentley released a model that recalled its racing glory. This was the 3 1/2 litre Derby, known as “the silent sports car.” The 1934 example that Historics of Brooklands will offer on May 18 has a body by Swallow, and is expected to sell for $80,000-$93,000.
Winston Churchill’s Daimler
November 16, 2010Only eight examples of the 1939 Daimler Drophead Coupe were built before the factory was bombed in the 1940 Blitz, destroying five of them. This car, Winston Churchill’s ride for “Special Domestic Occasions,” is the only known example remaining. Extensively—and expensively—restored, it will be the highlight at Historic’s December 4th Brooklands sale, where it’s expected to sell for $321-$401,000.
