August 23, 2011Old newspapers often have enormous historical value, but surprisingly small monetary value. Not so this 1265-page collection of Boston newspapers saved during the revolutionary era, including the day the Declaration of Independence was printed on the front pages, July 18, 1776. The collection was assembled by Harbottle Dorr, a Boston merchant, who saved the city’s newspapers for 12-years, and wrote his weekly observations in the margins, a kind of early day political blogger. High estimate is $300,000. (See Update for sale results).

November 30, 2010With the spectre of Lehman Brothers’ art sell-off in the background, the Bank of Ireland sold a portion of its art collection at an auction in Dublin. All but one of the 145 works went for a total of $2 million. The money goes to community art projects, not debt holders.
