Joan Crawford’s Oscar Sold Online For $426,000

Although “Mommie Dearest” gobbled all the headlines, it’s worth noting the American Film Institute still voted Joan Crawford one of the 10 greatest film actresses of all time, and her Oscar Statue for “Mildred Pierce” just knocked down $426,731 in a protracted online auction that included 24 bidders.

Weird Looking Astor Oscar For Sale

It’s a weird looking Oscar award given to Mary Astor in 1942 for supporting actress in, “The Great Lie.” Back then, the traditional statue was given only to leading roles. Astor’s bronze, tablet style trophy is up for online bidding at NateDSanders.com. She also starred with Humphrey Bogart in “The Maltese Falcon” but never won another Oscar.

“Casablanca” Oscar May Fetch $3m

The last time that the Academy Award Michael Curtiz won in 1943 for directing “Casablanca” came up for auction, it sold for $231,000. That was in 2003, and in the years since the market for Academy Awards has soared. This time around, it may take a record $2.5m-$3.5m to win the Oscar, which Los Angeles based Nate D. Sanders is offering in an online sale ending June 28.

Lincoln Opera Glass Up For Resale

The opera glasses Lincoln had in his hands the night he was assassinated are coming back to auction at the end of the month after they failed to sell last year when offered with an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000. At one time Malcolm Forbes, Sr., owned them. The current owner was not disclosed by auctioneer Nate D. Sanders handling the sale in Los Angeles.

Fifteen Oscars will be up for grabs and not a red carpet in sight when Nate D. Sanders Auctions brings the statuettes to market two days after the Award ceremony this Sunday. Wags might advise–if you can’t win one, buy one, but it could be pricey. In 1999 Michael Jackson paid $1.5m for the “Gone With The Wind” best picture trophy.

Rosebud Found: Welles’ Oscar For Sale

Some claim it’s the greatest movie ever made by one of the greatest actors who ever lived. In 1942 “Citizen Kane” got 9 Academy Award nominations, but won only one, best screenplay for Orson Welles. The actual statue disappeared for decades, but it resurfaced and Nate D. Sanders is selling it through an online auction. Current bid is $72,800.

$226,870 For Jefferson Letter

May 11, 2011

A handwritten letter that Thomas Jefferson penned in 1805 about the Lewis & Clark expedition sold at Nate D. Sanders yesterday for a hefty $226,870, including buyer’s premium. In the letter written to William Jarvis, American consul in Lisbon, the former President reports on the expedition and expresses the hope that Lewis & Clark will find a water route to the Pacific.

Michael Jackson in Cement

Capitalizing on the craze to stick stars’ hands and feet into wet cement, Michael Jackson agreed to it 25 years ago for a planned Walk of Fame in Las Vegas. The Walk never materialized, but they found the signed slab stashed in a casino basement and now it’s up for online bidding. The owner is hoping for $100,000.

Lee Harvey Oswald’s Coffin Sells for $87,469

December 17, 2010

A mystery buyer has paid almost ninety thousand dollars  for a wooden coffin that once held the remains of Lee Harvey Oswald, the accused assassin of John F. Kennedy.  Bidding had begun at $1000 for the coffin, which Santa Monica auctioneer Nate D. Sanders sold on behalf of the funeral director who handled the 1981 exhumation of Oswald’s body.
