Rarest of Russian Stamps at Cherrystone
September 02, 2010Formerly part of the Faberge collection, this strip of five blue and brown 1857 Russian stamps has been described as “the most important piece of Russian philately.” One of 53 lots in the Alexander Collection of Imperial Russia, it goes on sale September 16th at Cherrystone Auctioneers in New York, carrying a pre-sale estimate of $250,000.

May 25, 2010Only two telephone bidders vied for the rarest of rare Treskilling Yellow stamp,which David Feldman auctioned in Geneva last weekend. In the end, however, it was enough to result in what’s believed to be the highest price ever paid for a stamp at auction. Although the final sum wasn’t disclosed, the Daily Mail reported it as $2.3 million, right in line with the stamp’s $2.45 million pre-sale estimate.

May 17, 2010Some hundred and fifty years ago a Swedish schoolboy named Georg Wilhem Baeckman found a three skilling yellow stamp in his grandmother’s garbage. Normally the 3 skilling was green, and the boy’s irregularly colored discovery is the only one of its type ever to have been found. Known as the Treskilling Yellow, it will be auctioned later this month in Geneva, where it’s expected to sell for over $7 million.

But in the world of philately, he’s just as renowned for his fabulous collection, a portion of which will be on view when New York’s Spink Shreves Gallery auctions choice selections for charity. The 159 lots from Western Europe and its Colonies are expected to raise more than $1 million for Medecins Sans Frontieres or Doctors Without Borders.
