One of the rarest American coins in existence sold this past weekend at Heritage for a heady $1.38m. It’s a 1793 Chain S-4 Cent piece from the famed Eliasberg Collection. The “gem grade” coin, one of the three finest surviving example of the issue in the world, has an impeccable provenance dating from 1864.Another big seller at Heritage’s event in Orlando was an 1829 $5 Half-Eagle gold piece, which also fetched $1.38m. The “Large Date” coin is the only certified proof copy of its type. All told, Heritage’s January 4-8 sale brought in over $55.8m.
