How can a Barbie Doll possibly be worth a half-million dollars? This one sports a 1-carat pink diamond, surrounded by smaller diamonds weighing another two carats. It will be offered October 20 at Christie’s, New York, where it has a pre-sale estimate of $300-$500,000.
Update: The Barbie sold for $302,500 to an Asian collector.
Jeweler Stephano Canturi designed the arrangement of gems as well as the doll’s wardrobe.Unlikely as the estimated price might seem, the money will at least go to a good cause: The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. If it sells anywhere close to its estimate, the doll will be the world’s most valuable Barbie. The present Barbie auction record of $17,091 was set at Christie’s London in 2006.
