World Record Expected For Brough Motorcycle

December 01, 2010

$600-$700,000 for a motorcycle?  That’s the estimate a 1925 prototype Brough Superior SS100 Alpine Grand Sport will carry in Phillips de Pury’s December 15th auction in New York. If the Brough sells in that range it will be the highest price ever realized for a motorcycle at auction.

The historic bike was owned and raced by George Brough himself. The design was a favorite of  T.E. Lawrence, aka Lawrence of Arabia, who owned seven. It will be featured at a sale Phillips is calling Design Masters, which includes works by Carlo Bugatti, Le Courbusier, Ruhlmann, and Marc Newson, among others.

Huge Prices Expected At Spring Art Sales

May 1, 2012

Much of the speculation about the series of modern art auctions beginning in New York tomorrow has focused on Edvard Munch’s “Scream,” which is expected to sell at Sotheby’s for more than $106.4m. This would make it the most expensive painting ever sold at auction. There are a variety of other high value offerings, however, that in any other season would be getting the attention. These include Mark Rothko’s “Orange, Red, Yellow,” for which Christie’s expects a price of $35m-$45m, Andy Warhol’s “Double Elvis,” which carries a $30m-$50m estimate at Sotheby’s, and Roy Lichtenstein’s “Sleeping Girl,” which Sotheby’s estimates at $30m-$40m.

Middling Results At Phillips Contemporary Sale

November 8, 2011

Admitting the estimates may have been “too aggressive,” Phillips de Pury’s Contemporary art auction in New York managed to ring up only a total of $71m, way below the optimistic $97m high going into last night. Works by Warhol, Prince, Serra, Lichtenstein, Koons and Cattelan all met price resistance. Big seller was an untitled 2006 painting by Cy Twombly that went for $9m with fees.

Phillips’ ‘Evening Edition’ Highlights Print

October 21, 2011

It’s a stellar lineup for Phillips de Pury’s ‘Evening Edition’ auction of prints on October 26th, with works by Lucien Freud, Francis Bacon, Agnes Martin, Damien Hirst, and Andy Warhol. Top estimated lot at $120,000-$180,000 is Roy Lichtenstein’s relief print in colors, “Roommates from Nude Series, 1994.”
