While it’s hardly his day job, actor Richard Gere has been collecting American vintage guitars through the years. Now he says he’s consigning 100 of them to Christie’s, who will sell them in an auction on October 11. His intention, he announced, is to donate the estimated $1m in proceeds to support a variety of humanitarian causes around the world.
Highlights include a 1931 C.F. Martin Style D-28 (est $50,000-70,000), a Gibson solid-body electric guitar once owned by Albert King (est. $60,000-90,000), and a 1954 Fender Stratocaster (est.$30,000-40,000). Gere, an accomplished musician, said: “I’ve had a love affair with guitars since I was a kid…I never planned to put together a collection. I just bought ones that I liked, the ones that sounded good and played well.”
