Perhaps there’s no other athlete that can still command the world’s stage like Babe Ruth. Even 54-years after his death, the first jersey Ruth wore after the Red Sox peddled him to the Yankees sold yesterday for $4.4m. Nobody has paid that much for any sports artifact in history. Call it another Ruth record, likely to stand for some time.SCP Auctions said another company bought the jersey and intends to re-sell it to a private collector. The wool shirt has “New York” written across the front, but no number. It has hung for years at the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum in Baltimore. The Yankees switched Ruth from a pitcher/fielder to a full-time right fielder to concentrate on hitting, probably the best decision made in baseball—right after the decision to buy The Bambino in 1919 for $100,000. Ruth lived for baseball. He died at 53.
