October 21, 2010

The Bulgari Blue, a two-stone colored diamond ring weighing 9.87 carats, sold yesterday for $15,762,500 at Christie’s New York auction of Jewels.  Eight other items, including three diamond pieces by Harry Winston, sold for over $1 million on the way towards Christie’s $52.5 million total.

The Bulgari Blue’s result represented a new world record per carat for a blue diamond. Among other results, a 17.65 rectangular cut diamond ring by Harry Winston sold above estimates for $2,154,500, and another Harry Winston offering, 17.86 pear-shaped diamond ring sold within estimates for $1,818,500.

Kandinsky Leads Christie’s Impressionist Sale

June 19, 2013

As expected, Wassily Kandinsky’s “Studie zu Improvisation” led Christie’s Impressionist auction in London yesterday evening. The painting brought in $21.2m, which was well within estimates, although shy of the $24.8m world record price for which the auction house had been hoping. Kandinsky’s work was one of 22 whose prices exceeded $1m in the event, which realized a solid $100.4m, midway between its high and low estimates.

Patek Philippe Sells For $2.25m

June 11, 2013

A rare Patek Philippe pocket watch, notable for its many complications, sold today at Christie’s in New York for an impressive $2.25m, well over its $1m-$1.5m estimate. At the time of its original sale in 1900, the 18K pink gold chronograph was the most complex timepiece Patek Philippe had ever produced, offering such features as a perpetual calendar, grande and petite sonnerie, and moon phases. This was, according to Christie’s, the first time the watch had ever appeared on the auction market.

James Bond Barn Find: $90K ‘Thunderball’ Watch

May 22, 2013

The latest dramatic barn find involves a Breitling Top Time, the very watch Sean Connery wore in “Thunderball.” Several years ago a collector snapped it up at a yard sale for less than $40. Suspecting a higher value, the anonymous buyer took it to an expert for evaluation. The savvy collector wasn’t wrong: when the watch appears at a Christie’s auction next month in London, it’s expected to sell for as much as $90,000.
