When he bought it in New York, legend Jimi Hendrix only paid about $25 for the second-hand Epiphone FT79 acoustic guitar, but for the next three years it was his favorite. When Bonhams offers it at their Entertainment Memorabilia auction in Knightsbridge today, it’s expected to sell for $126-$189,000.
Hendrix used the instrument extensively for recording, performing, and jamming both here in the States and later in London. A film exists of Hendrix using the guitar to play Elvis’ “Hound Dog” at a party after The Experience’s Royal Albert Hall concert on February 18th. Later, after Hendrix gave the instrument to a friend, it was used on a variety of other recordings and film soundtracks by Paul McCartney and David Bowie, among others.
