The opera glasses Lincoln had in his hands the night he was assassinated are coming back to auction at the end of the month after they failed to sell last year when offered with an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000. At one time Malcolm Forbes, Sr., owned them. The current owner was not disclosed by auctioneer Nate D. Sanders handling the sale in Los Angeles. In the commotion following Lincoln’s murder the black and gold colored binoculars were picked up by Capt. James M. McCalmly, a City guard who was helping to carry Lincoln from the theater to the Petersen House where the president died 147 years ago. The opera glasses remained in the McCamly family for 3 generations.
