Their 1985 dance made headlines around the world. Now the dress that Princess Diana wore for her moment at the White House with actor John Travolta is expected to fetch at least $1m at a June auction in Toronto. Waddington’s will offer 14 of Diana’s dresses at the sale, where they’re estimated to sell for $6 million.
The dresses, by designers Zandra Rhodes, Catherine Walker, Bruce Oldfield, and Victor Edelstein, are the property of Maureen Rorech Dunkel, a Tampa businesswoman who paid $870,000 for them at an auction in 1997. At the time, Dunkel paid $222,500 alone for the midnight blue ball gown that Diana wore at the White House. For 10 years, the collection was on display at Kensington Palace.
