Audrey Hepburn’s “Roman Holiday” Dress To Sell

November 15, 2011

Who can forget the impression of winsome elegance that Audrey Hepburn made in “Roman Holiday?” It made her an instant star—she won an Oscar in 1954—and of course a fashion icon for the ages. Now the Edith Head-designed dress she wore in the movie’s last scene will be sold at a London auction, where it’s estimated to bring $63,000-$95,000.

UPDATE: Hepburn’s dress sold above estimates for $109,836, and Elizabeth Tayor’s Balenciaga gown brought $40,791. The dress worn by Amy Winehouse realized $56,387, well above the $32,000 high estimate.

The November 29th sale at Kerry Taylor Auctions includes a variety of other outfits owned or worn by celebrities, including a Balenciaga sari gown worn by Elizabeth Taylor ( $47,000-$79,000), and the Disaya dress that  Amy Winehouse wore on the cover of “Back to Black”($16,000-$32,000). Duplicate bridal shoes for Princess Diana’s 1981 wedding are certain to spur collector interest (est. $79,000-$110,000) as will the Emanuel replica of her wedding gown and related accessories (est. $71,000-$103,000), which were reproduced at her request for Madame Tussauds.

Taken when she was 25, the photo also prominently displays a “Billy Bob” tattoo, referring to former husband Thornton who has since been removed from her shoulder and her life.

Milton Berle’s Jokes Laugh To The Bank

May 8, 2013

For $158,000 a bidder got Milton Berle’s library, including books and boxes of bound scripts and personal correspondence, but he didn’t get the comedian’s thousands of one-liners and jokes carefully catalogued over the decades. That file went for another $65,000 at Bonham’s Entertainment auction this week.
