After Steve McQueen chose the Tag Heuer Monaco to wear in the racing film “Le Mans,” it became an instant favorite. With its square shape, blue face, and black alligator band, it carried with it both the allure of motor racing and the star’s distinctive style. Yesterday at an auction in Los Angeles, McQueen’s iconic watch sold for nearly $800,000, which was more than twice its $300,000 high estimate.Elsewhere in the Profiles in History sale, a signed passport belonging to McQueen brought $46,125. Other high-priced lots included a miniature drop-ship from the movie “Aliens,” which realized $225,000, Groucho Marx’s wire-rim glasses from ‘A Night at the Opera’ ($86,100), Vivien Leigh’s hat from ‘Gone With The Wind’ ($67,650), and Marlon Brando’s assassination jacket from ‘The Godfather.’
