High End Real Estate Roundup

September 06, 2011

A Midwestern chateau, a sprawling desert retreat, and a historic ranch near the Santa Monica mountains—these are a few of the high-end properties heading to auction this week. Find out more in our weekly real estate roundup.

The owners of a Winnetka, Illinois estate coming to auction this fall spent nearly 5 years and $40 million building their 27,000sf dream house. The mansion, based on Chateau Villandry in France, sits on 2 1/2 acres about 20 minutes from downtown Chicago. Completed in 2008 from a design by architect Richard Landry, it offers such features as hand-scraped walnut floors, a wine cellar with reclaimed stones from a French chateau, ornate Venetian plaster walls, a large in-home theatre, and yes, a beauty parlor. Outdoor amenities include a swimming pool and home spa with fireplace. Currently listed for $32m, the house will be sold furnished, with no reserve.

If a desert landscape is more to your taste, you might be interested in a 10,000sf contemporary in Paradise Valley, Arizona. Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and designed by his son-in-law, architect Charles Schiffner, the house has four bedrooms, 5 1/2 baths, and a four-car garage, as well as such features as a “Negative Edge” pool. Once listed for $9m, it offers “cascading” walls of glass, exposed steel beams, and two-foot thick concrete walls. Volga Blue granite counters enliven the gourmet kitchen and an elevator is available to shuttle you between levels. Supreme Auctions will offer the house next month with no reserve.

Should you find apartment living more appealing—especially when it’s in a tropical climate—there’s a penthouse condominium overlooking Biscayne Bay that’s coming up for auction on September 9th in Miami. It’s got 4 bedrooms and 4 1/2 baths in over 5,200sf as well as 1,000sf of terraces. There are lofted ceilings, high-end finishes, and 360 degree views. Even better, the condo comes with its own boat slip that can accommodate a 46-foot vessel. The auction will have a floor bid of $2.4m. At or above that, it could be yours.

Finally, on the West Coast there’s an interesting equestrian estate coming up for auction on October 1. Rimrock Acres is set beside the Santa Monica Mountains in Thousand Oaks, California, just outside Los Angeles. The 8100sf main house, which sits on 4.3 acres,  has 5 bedrooms, 6 full and 2 half bathrooms. Its 5-stall barn is just the first of many features, which also include a lighted tennis court, large pool, spa, and outdoor BBQ areas. A Guest House completes the picture. Once listed for $7.25m, the historic property will have an opening bid of  $1.5m.

Tuscan Village, Anyone?

July 5, 2012

Many dream of one day owning a villa in Tuscany. For those with even grander notions, however, an entire Tuscan village has come on the market—on eBay, of all places. Pratariccia is a collection of 25 cottages and almost 20 acres of hilltops above the Casentino Valley, about 25 miles from Florence. Abandoned for 50 years, the medieval village is owned by a religious order that has embraced eBay after failing to sell the town for an asking price of a bit more than $3m.
