High-End Real Estate Roundup

September 16, 2011

A renovated 1920’s Connecticut mansion, another Connecticut estate with its own trout stream and 10,000sf “Fieldhouse,” and a Sea Island waterfront retreat are all heading toward the block in coming weeks. Read more in our high-end real estate roundup.

The word mansion seems made for Wexford Hall, an imposing country home on over 6 acres in New Canaan, Connecticut. Designed in 1929 by New York architect William B. Tubby, the English-style manor has been the focus of a major renovation and addition in which its historical architecture and character have been preserved. A nearly quarter-mile dry stonewall –the largest in Connecticut– surrounds its “park-like” grounds, where you’ll find a 3-bedroom guest house, carriage house, and pool. It’s the 15,910sf main house, however, that’s the draw, with 8 bedrooms, 9 full baths, and 3 half baths. Bidding will begin on October 20 and last until the 25th.

If something more Colonial suits your taste, Concierge is offering another unusual estate that’s also in New Canaan. It’s a Williamsburg-style home that’s been fully renovated with all the old flourishes and soon new ones. Here, too, there are remarkable gounds, 6.43 landscaped acres with a stream-fed trout pond, freeform pool, spa, and guesthouse. The 16-room main house is no shack:  it offers 7 bedrooms, including a first floor master suite with floor-to-ceiling windows, fireplace, office, his and hers baths and dressing rooms. In the public areas, a two-story foyer leads to a living room with fireplace, paneled library, family room with fireplace, and gourmet kitchen appointed in French limestone. It’s the new 10,000sf “Fieldhouse,” however, that really sets this property apart. Newly constructed for $7m, it features a professional movie theatre that seats 30, a Full Swing electronic indoor golf course, a game room with bar, indoor bowling alley, and basketball court along with 3 bedrooms, baths, kitchen, living and dining rooms, and elevator. Formerly listed for $12,5m, it will be auctioned on October 20th.

Also heading toward the block this fall is a waterfront estate in Sea Island, Georgia. The 5 bedroom, 7 bath house, located in a gated community, is perched right on the waterfront, with its own dock, offering ocean access. Within the home, there’s a master suite with spa bathroom, a gourmet kitchen with commercial appliances, a hand-painted “Italian” mural, and limestone flooring, along with the usual suite of high-end spaces: formal dining room, sitting room, home office, silver room with safe, butler’s panty, and morning kitchen with bar. Outside, you’ll find an entertainment patio with pool, outdoor kitchen and fireplace. Grand Estates will auction the property on November 1.

Tuscan Village, Anyone?

July 5, 2012

Many dream of one day owning a villa in Tuscany. For those with even grander notions, however, an entire Tuscan village has come on the market—on eBay, of all places. Pratariccia is a collection of 25 cottages and almost 20 acres of hilltops above the Casentino Valley, about 25 miles from Florence. Abandoned for 50 years, the medieval village is owned by a religious order that has embraced eBay after failing to sell the town for an asking price of a bit more than $3m.
