"The Bride of Frankenstein" poster

Most Valuable Movie Poster Ever?

October 19, 2010

Only one copy exists of Universal’s 1935 teaser one sheet Style E movie poster for “The Bride of Frankenstein,” now in the Todd Feiertag Collection. Heritage will offer it at their Beverly Hills Signature Movie Poster Auction on November 11-13, when it’s expected to sell for over $700,000.

The ultra-rare poster from the Todd Feiertag Collection isn’t perfect. It’s listed in unrestored condition with a variety of minor imperfections. All the same, if it reaches its estimate, it will be the highest auction price ever for its category. A poster for “The Mummy,” which sold for $453,500in March, 1997, holds the current auction record. “Early Universal Horror movie posters are the blue chips of the collecting hobby,” said Heritage’s Grey Smith, “and this incredible Universal Horror one sheet…is easily the most dramatic I’ve ever seen, from any genre.”

Elizabeth Taylor’s ‘Cleopatra’ Cape At Heritage

March 27, 2012

When 20th Century Fox was planning the 1963 production of “Cleopatra,” the studio allotted what was then the staggering sum of $194,800 to Elizabeth Taylor’s wardrobe. An example of where all that money went can be seen in the intricate leather and gold cape that Taylor wore in two scenes of the movie.  When it goes on sale at Heritage on May 30th, bidding for the cape will start at $10,000, but the final tally is expected to be many times higher, perhaps even more than Taylor’s entire wardrobe budget for the notorious film.

Update: the cape sold for $59,375.

The Contract That Created Disneyland

March 9, 2012

Hard as it may be to believe now, when Walt Disney was planning Disneyland back in 1954, he had trouble raising money. So he entered into a contract with the third-place network ABC, which needed programming. According to it, ABC would invest in the theme park in exchange for a weekly television show that Disney would provide for a fee of $50,000 per episode.  Online auctioneer RR is currently offering that contract with Disney’s signature in a sale that scheduled to end on March 14.  Bidding stands at $8784, plus 20% buyer’s premium.

No Votes, Just Cash: 15 Oscars For Sale

February 22, 2012

Fifteen Oscars will be up for grabs and not a red carpet in sight when Nate D. Sanders Auctions brings the statuettes to market two days after the Award ceremony this Sunday. Wags might advise–if you can’t win one, buy one, but it could be pricey. In 1999 Michael Jackson paid $1.5m for the “Gone With The Wind” best picture trophy.
