Last month Sotheby’s sold Malcolm Forbes remarkable collection of toys, which included a number of boat models. But it was only a scintilla of the irrepressible publisher’s vest maritime collection—the largest ever assembled of ship models, marine painting and nautical memorabilia, which Red Baron Auctions will sell on January 29-30.
The collection includes ship models, half-models, and working models of all kinds of ships. Extraordinary examples include a 14.5 foot full-rigged builders model of the British twin-screw steamship the Orontes, built in 1929; and there’s a full-hull rigged builder’s model, 12 feet in length, of the British twin-screw passenger liner Rangitiki, also built in 1929. Also on offer are over 400 lots of maritime collectibles and maritime art, including one work by Matisse.
