Only Photo Jesse James Signed

March 16, 2011

Jesse James was usually on the run and left very little of himself behind, but on one occasion he did sign a photo that Leslie Hindman Auctioneers is offering on April 5th in Chicago.  The pre-sale estimate is $20,000–$30,000.  The albumen print is the only signed copy known to exist.

James’ granddaughter said the print was the real thing. She inherited it directly from the outlaw’s widow. After the granddaughter died her husband sold it, and it has been in private hands for more than 50-years.  A rare but unsigned photo of Billy The Kid will be offered by another auctioneer in June, who hopes for $300,000-$400,000, suggesting the James estimate may be quite low.

Lincoln’s Eyeglasses In Auction

June 17, 2013

Clear-eyed as Abraham Lincoln might have been, he still needed spectacles. The ones he carried in a 1865 portrait taken in Washington, D.C. by Alexander Gardner are currently up for sale in an online auction at Nate Sanders. Provenance comes in the form of a 1977 letter by his great grandson, Robert Todd Lincoln Beckwith,, who found them in  a trunk in the attic of his grandfather, Lincoln’s son Robert Todd Lincoln. Bidding currently stands at $52,855 in the auction ending June 27, but it’s expected to go much higher.

James Dean Watch In Hong Kong Auction

June 10, 2013

A retro pocket watch isn’t the sort of accessory one would naturally associate with screen rebel James Dean. Nonetheless, the movie icon regarded a gold-filled timepiece made by the Standard Watch Co., with a movement by Elgin, as his good luck charm. It was his first major purchase, which he acquired as a 21-year old struggling actor in New York, and he insisted on wearing it, against the objections of director Elia Kazan, in “East of Eden.” When it comes up for sale at an Antiquorum auction in Hong Kong on June 22, the watch is expected to sell for $5,000-$10,000.

Go Out Of This World With DiCaprio For $1.5m

May 24, 2013

Leonard DiCaprio is going into space on Richard Branson’s rocket this fall. Last night at a Cannes charity auction a Russian bid $1.5m to go with him. They will undergo astronaut training for 3-days before they blast off in the mothership from a California desert, detach, and go into orbit for nearly 3-hours. Nicole Kidman and Sharon Stone were the guest auctioneers.
