Four gold rimmed, glass goblets emblazoned with a swastika, a Nazi eagle, and the initials “A H” were sold in the UK last night for $5,000. They were estimated to go for $13,000. But even the JPHumbert auctioneer admitted there was no hard proof that they actually belonged to Adolph Hitler, proving once again provenance can be everything at an auction.
There was, however, active dispute about their authenticity among militaria collectors, some of whom noted the goblets appeared to be made by a supreme glass craftsman patronized by the Nazis who would have ordered nothing less for the Fuhrer’s sipping. Some claim they came from by G.I.s who “liberated” his Berlin bunker. Others note the Russians stormed the place first and left nothing of value. Someone from Sweden bought them via the Internet.
