Steve McQueen’s Rolex and FDR’s Movado

June 01, 2010

Watches once owned by celebrities may not be the most valuable items in Antiquorum’s June 9th sale of timepieces, but they certainly offer the most colorful histories. Included are SteveMcQueen’s Heuer “Monaco” wristwatch, which he famously wore in the 1971 movie “Le Mans,” as well as McQueen’s Rolex Submariner and Frank Sinatra’s pink gold Gruen, offered with a gold necklace whose links spell out the singer’s name.

A Movado retailed by Tiffany & Co. and presented to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on his 63rd and last birthday will also be featured in the sale, along with Sammy Davis Jr.’s Cartier Pasha, given to him by Frank Sinatra with the inscription, “Sammy I Luv Ya F.A.S.”  Out of the timepiece category but still firmly in the celebrity niche is Steve McQueen’s Von Dutch 1929 Scott Super Squirrel motorcycle, restored by Kenny “Von Dutch” Howard. It’s estimated to sell for $80-$120,000.

Rare Broughs & Vincents At Bonhams

April 5, 2012

The Brough Superior SS100 has always had a special cachet. Known as the “two of everything” model, its JAP v-twin engine had two carburetors, two magnetos, and two oil pumps. Produced in 1934, it’s the rarest of all SS100 models, as only eight were produced. One of them is a highlight at Bonhams classic motorcycle sale in the U.K. on April 29th, when it’s expected to sell for $237,000-$285,000.

Update: the 1934 Brough sold well above estimates for $393,434. A 1939 Vincent realized almost as much, or $365,343.

1894 Steam Motorcycle Falls Short Of Record

January 17, 2012

Commentators predicted that a 1894 Roper Steam racer might break the $520,000 world record auction price paid for a motorcycle, set in 2008 by a 1915 twin-cylinder Cyclone. That didn’t happen. All the same, the Roper sold for $425,000 at RM America’s Las Vegas motorcycle auction on January 12-14.

Steve McQueen Looms Large At Motorcycle Auction

January 3, 2012

Even if Steve McQueen hadn’t owned it, the Harley Davidson WLD 45ci Sport that coming up for auction later this month would be considered special. Original and fully documented, with just 21,100 miles on its odometer, the 1938 motorcycle is in a rare Sport Solo configuration, with an extra high compression engine. RM’sAuctions America didn’t release an estimate for the bike, which it will offer at its Las Vegas Motorcycle auction on January 12-14.
