A year ago this month, two bottles of 18th century Veuve Cliquot recovered from a shipwreck in the Baltic Sea sold for $78,400. Today, 11 more bottles from the same stash of perfectly preserved champagne sold at an auction in Finland for $156,000. Six of the bottles were from Juglar, closed since 1829, one was from Heidsieck, and four from Veuve Cliquot, one of which sold for $18,771.The champagne, recovered off the coast of Finland, dates from 1782-1788. The auction was held in Mariehamm, in the Finnish Aland archipelago, near the point where a diver discovered the cache in 2010 amid the wreckage of a schooner.

March 30, 2013Connoisseurs of whiskey are as passionate as wine collectors, and apparently as willing to shell out heady sums. Witness some of the offerings in Bonhams’ whiskey auction in New York next month, which features an array of limited and commemorative edition cognacs and scotches. The highlights are likely to be a 50 year-old Macallan anniversary distilled in 1928 (est. $20,000-$25,000) and a 57 year-old Macallan Lalique with a frosted crystal stopper (est. $15,000-$20,000).

Tang Wine Collection Scores In Hong Kong
March 18, 2013To politicos, Henry Tang is the controversial former chief secretary of Hong Kong. To wine connaisseurs, he’s known for his love of Burgundy vintages, his collection considered among the finest in Asia. This weekend Christie’s helped him liquidate a “small portion” of that collection in a Hong Kong auction that brought in $6.2m, far above its $3.7m estimate. Every lot sold at the event, where the top lot was a 6-magnum offering of 1995 Romanee-Conti Grand Cru, which realized $156,741.

Christie’s Luxury Week
December 10, 2012Closing out its 2012 season, Christie’s will offer a Luxury Week series of sales, beginning today with an event in New York devoted to jewels, led by a 50.01 carat diamond ring by Graff, (est. $7m-$10m). In tomorrow’s sale, Christie’s will auction a collection of furniture, fine and decorative art from the estate of legendary director Billy Wilder, and in coming days, there will be sales, six in all, devoted to watches, wine, and 20th century design.
