Will Windy City Wine Prices Match Hong Kong’s?

October 05, 2011

How will Chicago stack up to Hong Kong big spenders when retailer Hart Davis Hart hosts an auction of very rare wine at its October 29 sale in the exclusive Tru Restaurant? On the block will be Lafite and Lataour and Romanee-Conti and dozens of other chateaux and private cellars. They’re hoping the 1300 lots add up to $5 million when it’s over.

Hart Davis Hart hosts soirees and sales on a regular basis, but at this sale they’re offeering $1 million worth of Chateau Lafite, alone. There will also be fine wines from the Rhone, as well as rare burgundies and bordeaux. The wine will be there, the question is, will the money be there as well?

High Spirits At Bonhams

March 30, 2013

Connoisseurs of whiskey are as passionate as wine collectors, and apparently as willing to shell out heady sums. Witness some of the offerings in Bonhams’ whiskey auction in New York next month, which features an array of limited and commemorative edition cognacs and scotches. The highlights are likely to be a 50 year-old Macallan anniversary distilled in 1928 (est. $20,000-$25,000) and a 57 year-old Macallan Lalique with a frosted crystal stopper (est. $15,000-$20,000).

Tang Wine Collection Scores In Hong Kong

March 18, 2013

To politicos, Henry Tang is the controversial former chief secretary of Hong Kong. To wine connaisseurs, he’s known for his love of Burgundy vintages, his collection considered among the finest in Asia. This weekend Christie’s helped him liquidate a “small portion” of that collection in a Hong Kong auction that brought in $6.2m, far above its $3.7m estimate. Every lot sold at the event, where the top lot was a 6-magnum offering of 1995 Romanee-Conti Grand Cru, which realized $156,741.

Christie’s Luxury Week

December 10, 2012

Closing out its 2012 season, Christie’s will offer a Luxury Week series of sales, beginning today with an event in New York devoted to jewels, led by a 50.01 carat diamond ring by Graff, (est. $7m-$10m). In tomorrow’s sale, Christie’s will auction a collection of furniture, fine and decorative art from the estate of legendary director Billy Wilder, and in coming days, there will be sales, six in all, devoted to watches, wine, and 20th century design.
